Established in 1900, the New South Wales Chess Association (NSWCA) is the governing body of chess in New South Wales and is affiliated with the Australian Chess Federation (ACF), which is affiliated with the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The New South Wales Junior Chess League (NSWJCL) and most NSW chess clubs are affiliated with the NSWCA.
The NSWCA’s main objectives are to encourage, promote, maintain and control the playing of chess in the state of New South Wales by:
- Encouraging the teaching and playing of chess in schools and amongst juniors, and by promoting matches between schools.
- Promoting and conducting chess matches, competitions, and tournaments.
- Awarding prizes, titles and awards.
- Affiliating with the Australian Chess Federation and, as is necessary, affiliating or cooperating with other chess, sporting or social organisations, whether inside or outside New South Wales.
- Adopting or altering rules of play.
- Providing means for hearing and determining disputes.
Every year, the NSWCA runs a range of chess tournaments, including:
- NSW Chess Championships
- NSW Open Championships
- City of Sydney Championships
- Weekend tournaments
- Various Blitz and Rapid Tournaments
To participate in events held by the NSWCA, you must become a member of the NSWCA by paying an annual fee, determined by the council at the Annual General Meeting. Membership must be renewed each year to continue participating in NSWCA events.
